Milwaukee AHEC partners with community organizations to provide health services and education to underserved populations. Programs include:
Wisconsin Arthritis Program In partnership with the Wisconsin Arthritis Program, Milwaukee AHEC offers programs that increase awareness of arthritis, its impact, and effective prevention techniques. Among other activities, five hours of continuing education programs were conducted for 89 health professionals. 21 hours of general outreach programs reached 226 community participants. Diabetes Awareness and Risk Education In partnership with Columbia St. Mary's, Milwaukee AHEC provides diabetes education to minority populations. 264 hours of diabetes education were provided to 571 community participants. In partnership with the Wisconsin Diabetes Prevention and Control Program and Milwaukee Public Schools, 28 peer health educators were trained in diabetes prevention and awareness. Fight Asthma Milwaukee Allies An asthma curriculum was created for 4th through 6th graders, piloted in September 2009.
Head Start Dental Day Over 550 preschool children received free dental exams while students gained experience in their future field of dentistry. Dental hygiene students also served as roving educators, training parents on oral health issues.
UW-ICTR Community Health Connections Research Coordinator housed at Milwaukee AHEC The vision of Community Health Connections is to develop a regionally-based infrastructure to help promote and nurture ideas and community-based projects that will influence Type 2 translational research being done at UW-Madison, and at campuses and in communities across Wisconsin.
