Head Start Dental Day Two oral health education sessions were held for 19 Head Start parents. Seven parents volunteered at the Head Start Dental Day on October 1st, by educating other parents about oral health. Over 400 children participated in the event. Six Youth Health Service Corps also volunteered to make the day a great success!
Wisconsin Express Twelve students from multi-disciplinary backgrounds, medicine, dietetics, nursing, occupation therapy, and health education, participated in WI Express. WI Express is a week long program for college students studying to become health professionals. Students gain insight into health disparities, cultural challenges, and health care resources in Milwaukee through first-hand experiences and presentations from professionals.
Students had experiences at Walker’s Point Community Clinic, Milwaukee Public Schools, Meta House, Salvation Army, St. Ben’s (clinic and community meal program), The Gathering, STEP Industries, Repairers of the Breach, and Growing Power, among others.
At the end of the week students reflected on their experiences and how it will impact their future. “WI Express has opened my eyes to the things I knew existed, but did not want to see. I feel like I made a difference this week because of who I am and what I stand for. Culture does not have to be a shock-it can be-embraced-even if it is not understood.”
“I will take this into the future with me, that is-each person is a person, no matter what their circumstances are and deserve to be treated with the same love and compassion as any other person. Out of this love and compassion will the health of individuals be improved and meaningful relationships built.”
YHSC Volunteer Event Eleven YHSC members volunteered at a community event called “El Día de Los Niños—Children’s Day" on Saturday, April 30th. They educated children and families about oral hygiene and nutrition.
Youth Health Service Corps training On Thursday, March 3rd, six students from Washington High School attended the new member training for the Youth Health Service Corps. During the training, students practiced hands-on healthcare skills, such as taking blood pressure. They also learned about vulnerable populations, volunteer opportunities in their community, and much more.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day For the Milwaukee Youth Health Service Corps members, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was anything but a day off of school! Students dedicated their time and talents creating Martin Luther King Jr. themed placemats and centerpieces for the Ronald McDonald House.
A CPR and AED course was offered in the morning, a YHSC program requirement, where students learned proper techniques and emergency procedures for someone experiencing cardiac arrest.
