YHSC is a program designed for high school students interested in pursuing health careers in their post-secondary education studies. By exposing them to growing health career opportunities through training and volunteer projects that address community health care needs, students acquire real-life health care experiences under the guidance of professional role models. Volunteer experiences this year included:

  • Shadowing nurses in a free community health clinic,

  • Assisting in providing dental care education to uninsured children and their families,

  • Designing health education activities for peers, and

  • Exercising with residents at an assisted living facility.

The YHSC program focuses on educating students about leadership skills, cultural competency, vulnerable populations, the ethical and legal issues associated with health careers, health careers, health care skills, and CPR and AED certification. Training activities included:

  • Visiting a gross anatomy lab at a local university,

  • Participating in a poverty simulation, and

  • Visiting a medical college simulation lab.
