Milwaukee is one of the 25 largest cities in the United States. It is also the largest city in Wisconsin as well as an international seaport. The population breakdown for the city of Milwaukee, where the majority of Milwaukee AHEC’s services are concentrated, is 17.9% Latino, 41.7% White, 35.8% African American, 4% Asian and 0.6% other. Over 24.1% of the residents are below the poverty level, and the city has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the nation.
Despite the challenges, the region is rich in resources. There are 13 institutions of higher learning in southeast WI. There are six Community Health Centers operating 16 delivery sites serving the homeless and other vulnerable populations. The greatest resource is the diversity of its people. Southeast WI is home to many newcomers, who bring their languages & culture to enhance the richness of the community.
